Barack Obama - Presidential Campaign 2008

Heather's Obama blog Weekend in West Lafayette, IN
|
Well - I just got back from spending the weekend in W-Lafayette, IN. I'm an Indiana grad currently living in Columbus,
OH. I went out there to split my time between visiting some family friends and campaigning. On Saturday, I
canvassed neighborhoods to register voters on Saturday (got a sunburn - it was a GORGEOUS day! Sure beat
some of the weather we had in Ohio and PA - freezing rain and snow - BRR!) and today, I worked in the main office
HQ in Lafayette - tallying the canvassing numbers, organizing packets, data entry, etc etc etc. It was a good time.
Although it was a smaller operation that what I've seen in Columbus, OH and Pittsburgh, PA, the folks working were
no less dedicated or enthusiastic as any other volunteers I've either met or worked with. While I'd have loved to
volunteer in Bloomington (mainly to see my alma mater), I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with all the Purdue folks -
who, fortunately, were rather forgiving of the fact that I went to their rival school! :-)
What was especially great, is that I made this trip with my parents (the friends were their best friends) and we talked
about Obama and the issues all the way there - from Richmond where my folks live, it was about two hours. But as
well, I discussed the issues with their best friends. My parents, their friends - all Republicans, but they're considering
Obama. The way I see it, if they're even asking about him and wanting to know where he stands on the issues, that's
a big step for them!
We had one gentleman stop in the office today for a bumper sticker. He didn't necessarily want to volunteer, but he
did say that he was a lifelong republican who was definitely voting for Obama and wanted to at least put a sticker on
his car. That, to me, is a wonderful thing!!
So my trip back home again in Indiana (sorry, couldn't resist!) was a good one. I plan to go back the end of the
month - though probably to Indy or Richmond. Given a chance, Hoosier hospitality is a great thing - of course,
having been born in New Albany, gont to Jr. High and High School in Frankfort and Terre Haute, college in B'town
and having worked in Indy - - - - my opinion is slighly biased!
Thanks for the hospitality Hoosiers! (or should I say Boilermakers!)
Take care and see you soon!
